Here is what Enzo Fernendez did that got him the shock deadline move to Chelsea
Here is what Enzo Fernendez did that got him the shock deadline move to Chelsea even when his Benfica Coach is angry at his actions.
In the final hours of the January transfer window, Chelsea finally got their man after agreeing a British record £106million deal for the Argentina international.
It followed weeks of negotiations between the two clubs with a final push aided by Fernandez’s desire to make the move happen this month.
The Times report Benfica, who were left angered by Chelsea’s conduct during talks, urged the 22-year-old to reject a move to Stamford Bridge, warning him the club was in ‘turmoil’ and are likely to miss out on Champions League qualification.
Fernandez however was desperate to make the move and according to Record, threatened never to play for Benfica again and return to Argentina.
The midfielder did just that early in the January window after Chelsea’s initial interest emerged. Fernandez defied his club by returning to his homeland and missing training over the New Year period.
He was disciplined by his club for those actions but later returned to the side and seemed to signal his intent to stay with his celebration in front of Benfica fans after scoring in the Portuguese Cup win over Varzim.
While subsequent reports suggested Fernandez was willing to finish the season at Benfica, Chelsea renewed efforts to sign him this month and got the deal over the line in time.
Fernandez made just 29 appearances for Benfica having joined the Portuguese giants from River Plate in a £8m deal last summer.
In a parting message to the club, he wrote on Instagram: ‘Thank you Benfiquistas. My family wanted to thank you for all the love we received in these last five months, I am grateful to God for giving me the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
‘I enjoyed every moment to the fullest and always gave my best. Let the press not stain what we built together because it was something wonderful that I had never imagined.
‘Thanks to all the people who work too hard to make the institution much bigger than it is. Thanks to my colleagues for always treating me in the best way and making me feel at home.
‘I am grateful to the club’s leadership and especially to Roger Schmidt, to all your work staff for the trust and daily respect. I was very happy.’
