The 25-year-old won the Bundesliga Golden Boot award – despite missing two months of the season through injury – scoring 16 goals in just 25 league appearances. Chelsea are in desperate need of a goalscorer after Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling finished as the Blues’ top scorers with nine strikes each last term.

“The signs are very, very clear that he’s moving to Chelsea,” RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl told BILD recently. Nkunku scored and grabbed an assist as he helped Leipzig lift the DFB-Pokal trophy in his last appearance for the German outfit.

Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana was asked about the arrival of his fellow countryman ahead of the summer transfer window. Fofana replied: “If it happens, I’m very happy.

“He has enormous qualities. It would be pure happiness to have him with us.”

Nkunku, though, was coy about his future and the summer transfer window as he said on international duty: “I am focused on gathering with Les Bleus. Everything that happens after, we will have time to think.”

When asked about his favourite position and where he might play under Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge, Nkunku added: “I play where the coach decides. I don’t want to be a problem but a solution.

“But I can be in front, in support or on the sides. I have this ability to adapt it – I like to be free.”
