Thiago Silva was shouting instructions from the Chelsea bench towards Marc Cucurella during last night’s win against AFC Wimbledon.

Chelsea overturned a deficit on Wednesday night to beat League Two side AFC Wimbledon 2-1 in the Carabao Cup second round. Incidentally, they’ve been drawn at home to Brighton in the third round.

Now, Mauricio Pochettino’s side host Nottingham Forest this weekend in the Premier League before the international break.

He explained on X: “Thiago Silva stood up among the substitutes shouting advice and telling Cucurella way to position himself.”

Silva, 38, was given the night off as he was left out the matchday squad. That didn’t stop the veteran defender from making his presence known on the sidelines, though.

Cucurella came into the Chelsea XI last night for his first appearance of the season. The 25-year-old left-back received some tactical advice from the most experienced player in the squad.

Some people will have been shocked to see Cucurella play last night amid speculation he could join Manchester United this week during the final hours of the transfer window.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on X yesterday that Man United have reached an agreement in principle with Cucurella on personal terms. The clubs are now working to finalise a deal for the Spanish full-back.

In our view, it’s best for all parties if this deal gets pushed over the line in the next 48 hours.

Cucurella will have to be marked down as yet another really poor decision from the recruitment, but it’s all about giving Mauricio Pochettino a functional squad he can work with this season.
