Harry Maguire says he feels vindicated over his decision to stay at Old Trafford this summer after being linked with a move to West Ham United.

Erik ten Hag brought in Harry Maguire earlier this season following injuries to Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane and the Englishman hasn’t looked back.

The former Leicester City man has excelled at the heart of the United defence and now looks to be unquestionably the club’s first-choice defender.

The turnaround in Maguire’s form has been, at times, very surprising. West Ham United and David Moyes were waiting for the defender but he decided to turn down their advances.

Maguire on feeling vindicated

Speaking to The Athletic, the English defender has spoken about the sense of vindication he feels now that he is getting his opportunity in the side.

“I had two or three opportunities last season to get a run of games but I broke down with illness, I broke down with injuries twice, so I never got the rhythm and never got the run of games that I could prove myself to the manager,” Maguire said.

“I have got that now, I am really enjoying my football and I really enjoy playing for this club. I was willing to stay and fight for my place and we have four or five top international centre-backs at this club and the competition for places is really high.”

The Englishman was once again in imperious form last Saturday against Luton Town and he simply has to be a starter going forward.

Maguire staking his claim

Maguire has staked his claim to Ten Hag that when all of his centre-backs are fit, he deserves to be one of the starters.

He has started the last eight games for the Red Devils and has looked consistently good in all of them.

Things looked bleak for him when he was stripped of the captaincy last summer but he’s turned things around, magnificently.
