An entertaining clash at St James’ Park saw Raheem Sterling cancel out Alexander Izak’s early opener with a stunning free-kick. Jamaal Lascelles restored Newcastle’s lead, but it was still all the play for with half an hour left.

But then came Silva’s moment to forget. After the ball was played back to him, the 39-year-old attempted to pass it back to his keeper, Robert Sanchez, only to seemingly get his studs stuck in the turf and make feeble contact with the ball.

That allowed an alert Joelinton to nip in and put Newcastle two goals up. It was unfortunate timing for the Brazilian on the day he became the club’s oldest-ever outfield player at 39 years and 64 days.

The gaffe prompted some fans to urge Silva to call time on his glittering career. One said: “Thiago Silva, just retire bro.” Another added: “Retirement is really knocking hard on Thiago Silva’s door.” A third commented: “Newcastle just made Thiago Silva retire.”

A fourth fan blasted: “Look at Thiago Silva lol. He should just retire. His legs can’t keep up with the pace of the game.”

Meanwhile, a Chelsea supporter pleaded: “Please retire Thiago Silva, enough of the legend bull****. Look, those Newcastle players are running like a mad dog.”

Another fumed: “Absolute disaster from Chelsea, the whole defence was awful, a well deserved win to Newcastle United. Reece James and Thiago Silva let us down, Chelsea fans we deserve apology.”

It went from bad to worse for Chelsea after that moment with skipper James being sent off and Anthony Gordon making it 4-1 against the 10 men.
