He is the only player I idolized while a kid and growing up; Chelsea target Caicedo finally opens up.
His piece today on Moises Caicedo is a fascinating read for anyone who wants some background colour on the man who has gone from a nobody on loan from Brighton to a team in Belgium; to a Premier League superstar worth £100m – at least according to the Seagulls.
Chelsea’s transfer interest is well established as they look to find a top player to play alongside Enzo Fernandez. Lang claims that if they’re looking for player to try and replace N’Golo Kante (as impossible as that might be), they may well have found one: according to Lang, Caicedo “idiolised” Kante during his adolescence, and tried to shape his game around him.
Caicedo even pointed to specific things he liked about the France star who left Chelsea this summer:
“He covers the whole pitch, which I like,” Caicedo said in an interview, aged 16. “He’s also calm: he prefers to focus on his own game rather than get into arguments.”
This wasn’t a one off, either. He mentioned his admiration for the World Cup winner in other interviews, and has clearly put in a lot of effort to model his game in a similar way.
We don’t need him to be as good as Kante. If he’s half as good, that will improve our team a lot. He certainly has the energy and the reading of the game necessary.
