Klopp’s admission gives Arsenal and Chelsea Mbappe transfer decision

Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been linked in some capacity with a blockbuster move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe in the first week of the January transfer window.

The 25-year-old can now open negotiations with clubs across Europe for a pre-contract agreement ahead of a summer move after entering the final six months of his deal in Paris. Mbappe is one of the world’s best players meaning his next move promises to be one of the biggest deals in modern history.

Real Madrid has always seemed the most likely destination for the France international but interest from the Premier League has developed over recent months. One of the biggest stumbling blocks in any potential deal is the wages set to be demanded.

Any move isn’t expected to happen until the summer, with Arsenal and Chelsea fancying their chances as time goes on. Fortunately for Mikel Arteta and Mauricio Pochettino’s side, Jurgen Klopp has already revealed his doubts over Liverpool’s chance of signing the striker.

Despite reports in France claiming that the Reds ‘dream’ of signing Mbappe, the finances involved would make a move to Anfield incredibly unlikely. Klopp had wanted to sign the electric forward when he was at AS Monaco, but the German has already admitted he would be surprised if he moved to Merseyside.

“We laugh about it,” Klopp told Sky Germany, back in August. “I can say that I think he’s a really good player but the financial conditions don’t suit us at all. I wouldn’t like to ruin the story now… but as far as I know, there’s nothing to it.

“It’s possible that someone else from the club is preparing something and wants to surprise me… that hasn’t happened in the eight years that I’ve been here. That would be the first time.”

Despite Klopp’s comments in the summer, things could change depending on the future of Mohamed Salah. The forward was the subject of a world-record in August and at 31, his future at Liverpool remains unclear.

Should the ex-Chelsea man depart, he would leave a massive hole in Klopp’s attack and the club would find themselves well-equipped to break the bank for Mbappe
