Nike confirm they’ve dropped Mason Greenwood – but he still wears their gear
Mason Greenwood still wears Nike football boots on the pitch but the sportswear brand has stressed the forward is no longer one of their athletes after he showed off his trainer collection
Nike has reiterated that it no longer sponsors Mason Greenwood after the player showed off his expensive shoe collection.
Greenwood, 22, was dropped by Nike in February 2022 after he was arrested on charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges – which Greenwood had denied – in February 2023.
After much deliberation and an internal investigation, his parent club Manchester United decided in the summer that Greenwood no longer had a future at Old Trafford and he has since been out on loan to Spanish side Getafe.
And on Tuesday the winger showed off several pairs of different coloured Nike shoes spilling out of a bag on Instagram. One of his photos included a pair of £9,000 platinum Cactus Plant Flea Market Pure Platinum Nike Dunk Lows covered in Swarovski crystals, while another showcased £2,113 Desert Moss trainers.
Other pictures shared on the forward’s social media during his time with Getafe show him wearing the American brand’s old football boots during training and matches. But the sportswear giant has confirmed once again that Greenwood is no longer linked to Nike, according to The Sun.
A spokesperson told the outlet: “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.” The spokesperson went further to say that Nike no longer had any relationship with the Getafe player.
Greenwood is not understood to have signed a new contract with any boot maker since having his Nike contract binned. Yet he has not opted to play with blackout boots – something which players without sponsors often do when they are not getting paid to endorse a specific brand.
The former England international has scored three goals in 10 matches for Getafe this season across all competitions, along with notching three La Liga assists. It is still unclear whether United will look to sell Greenwood or loan him out again next summer.
He still has two years remaining on his Red Devils contract, earning £75,000-per-week. Failure to offload him would leave the club with a payment of almost £8million in wages.
