Many Chelsea fans were keen to see Ruben Loftus-Cheek start instead of him today, but instead Frank Lampard went with Kovacic.

It didn’t last long – after 40 minutes the Croatian picked up what looked like a calf injury which forced him off. And when Ruben came on to replace him he did well right away.

It was Lotus-Cheek’s drive forward with the ball in the second half which set up Raheem Sterling’s goal, and as ever he was a dangerous presence in midfield, shielding the back four and moving the ball forward at his feet when he had a chance.

Whether Kovacic is out or not, RLC has earned a start in the games to come.
