Todd Boehly makes six-word verdict on Chelsea’s new head coach Mauricio Pochettino; Here’s what he said.
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has spoken for the first time in public about the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.
The 51-year-old’s arrival was confirmed earlier this month which sees him officially start on July 1 on an initial two-year contract, with a club option of a further year.
Following the announcement, Boehly, along with Behdad Eghbali, José E. Feliciano, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss, said in a joint-statement: “The sporting team conducted a diligent and thoughtful process that the Board is proud of.
“We are delighted that Mauricio will be joining Chelsea. Mauricio is a world-class coach with an outstanding track record. We are all looking forward to having him on board.”
Pochettino is Chelsea’s third permanent head coach of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership after their May 2022 takeover.
Chelsea are looking to avoid a repeat of the dismal 2022/23 campaign which saw them finish 12th in the Premier League.
Work is already underway to overhaul the squad, offloading many players and trying to recruit a couple of key additions for Pochettino to work with in pre-season. Moises Caicedo of Brighton & Hove Albion is thought to be one of their top targets after missing out on the signing of Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
Boehly has been pictured in Saudi Arabia this week meeting Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and Fahad bin Nafel, who is the current President of Al-Hilal.
During Boehly’s visit, he was met by a fan who quizzed the American on Pochettino and the Chelsea co-owner shared a six-word response on his thoughts of the Argentine.
He said: “Pochettino is going to be great.”
